Step Two: International Commercial Terms and Industry Jargon
International Commerical Terms
Your supplier/s will offer you a quote for your goods under a particular Term of Trade. What this means to you is that, depending on what Term of Trade your supplier chooses to move your goods under, will depend on where the supplier responsibility for the cargo ends and yours begins.
Please download our International Commercial Terms Document to educate yourself on the industries terms of trade.
Special Note on Terms of Trade: Just because your supplier says to you he/she wants to quote you under a particular Term of Trade, say CNF. Does not mean you have to accept this particular term. You are able, in most circumstances, to negotiate a term of trade, say FOB or Ex-works, if it is more suitable to your needs.
China usually operates on FOB terms and USA and Europe are generally Ex-Works.
Terms & Abbreviations
Within our industry there are many terms and abbreviations that are used everyday and if you don’t familiarize yourself with these, you will be wondering what you are being charged a CAF & BAF for or why your goods are OOG? Or you could perhaps delay your shipment by not organizing the appropriate paperwork!
Please download our Terms & Abbreviations for more information on the most commonly used industry terms.
Your Check List
Last but not least, please download our import / export checklist to ensure you give your freight-forwarder the correct information and paperwork in the first instance.
Things to Consider Prior to Working out your Costs
1. Tax and duties will not be included in your costs but you will need to consider them as they will be a large portion of your import costs.
Duty is a particular % (depending on your commodity) of the FOB value. The FOB value is the cost of the goods, plus any overseas FOB charges. FOB charges being any cost to get those goods on a vessel. Usually if the importer has purchased the goods under FOB terms, they can assume the value on their commercial invoice is the FOB value. Duty is a % of that amount.
Tax is 10% of the CIF value + the duty amount from the above formula. The CIF value is the cost of the goods, the marine insurance, the freight amount to get the goods to Australia and the duty amount. Tax will be 10% of those values.
